About this screen
Pharmaceutical companies develop, manufacture and sell prescription and over-the-counter medicines. The big research-based drugmakers earn most of their profit from patented brands, while specialty and generic manufacturers compete on niche therapies, cost and manufacturing scale. Demand for medicine does not depend much on the economy, so the group is often treated as defensive, and many of the larger members pay steady dividends funded by long-lived product franchises.
The list is sorted by market cap and opens on the Valuation tab, where P/E and forward P/E show how the market prices each pipeline. Patent expirations can cut revenue sharply within a few years, so compare EPS growth in the Growth tab with the forward P/E. The Dividends tab adds yield and payout ratio for income-focused research. Early-stage drug developers are classified as biotechnology and are not included here.
Pharmaceutical Stocks FAQ
How many pharmaceutical stocks are on this list?
As of the October 29, 2026 close, 42 US-listed drug manufacturers had a market cap of $2 billion or more. The largest companies on the list are Eli Lilly and Company (LLY), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) and AbbVie Inc. (ABBV).
What is the difference between pharma and biotech stocks?
Pharmaceutical companies usually sell a broad portfolio of approved drugs, often small-molecule medicines, and generate stable earnings. Biotechnology companies tend to focus on biologic therapies and are more often still in clinical development. The line has blurred as large drugmakers acquire biotechs, but the industry classification still separates them.
What is a patent cliff?
A patent cliff is the drop in sales that follows when a major drug loses patent protection and cheaper generic or biosimilar versions enter the market. Revenue from the affected product can fall by more than half within a year or two. Investors watch upcoming expirations when judging a drugmaker's earnings outlook.
