About this screen

The aerospace and defense industry includes prime contractors that build aircraft, ships, missiles and satellites for governments, along with suppliers of engines, electronics, components and services. Defense revenue rests on multi-year government programs and large backlogs, which makes it more predictable than most industrial businesses. Rising defense budgets in many countries have increased investor interest in the group.

The list is sorted by market cap. The same industry also includes commercial aerospace companies whose sales follow airline orders, so check each company's business before comparing them. Use the Growth tab for revenue trends, the Profitability tab for operating margin, and the Valuation tab for P/E and EV/EBITDA. Program delays and fixed-price contract overruns can cut earnings even when revenue grows.

Defense Stocks FAQ

Which defense stocks are the largest?

As of the October 29, 2026 close, 47 US-listed aerospace and defense companies had a market cap of $2 billion or more. The largest companies on the list are Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SPCX), GE Aerospace (GE) and RTX Corporation (RTX).

What is a defense prime contractor?

A prime contractor holds the main contract with a government for a weapons system or platform and manages the subcontractors who supply parts. Primes carry most of the program risk and receive the largest share of the contract value.

What is backlog and why does it matter?

Backlog is the value of orders a company has received but not yet delivered. A large and growing backlog gives visibility into future revenue, which is one reason defense companies tend to have steadier sales than other industrials.
