About this screen
Consumer staples companies sell products people buy regardless of the economy: packaged food, beverages, household and personal care products, tobacco, and the grocery and discount stores that sell them. Demand stays fairly stable in recessions, and strong brands support pricing power, so the sector is widely used as a defensive holding. Many of its largest members have raised their dividends for decades.
The list opens on the Dividends tab, where yield, payout ratio and years of dividend growth highlight the income side of the group. Staples usually grow slowly, so revenue growth in the Growth tab shows which companies are gaining share or relying on price increases. Low beta is typical; check it in the Technicals view. Valuations can stay high when investors seek safety.
Consumer Staples Stocks FAQ
Which consumer staples stocks are the largest?
As of the October 29, 2026 close, 48 Consumer Defensive stocks had a market cap of $10 billion or more. The largest companies on the list are Walmart Inc. (WMT), Costco Wholesale Corporation (COST) and The Coca-Cola Company (KO).
Why are consumer staples considered defensive?
People keep buying food, toothpaste and detergent in good and bad times, so sales and earnings tend to hold up in recessions. Share prices usually fall less than the broader market during downturns, though they may lag in strong bull markets.
What is the difference between consumer staples and consumer discretionary?
Staples are necessities with steady demand. Consumer discretionary, called Consumer Cyclical in this screener, covers goods and services people can postpone, such as cars, travel, apparel and restaurants, whose sales rise and fall with the economy.
