About this screen
A company with almost no debt does not depend on lenders, faces no refinancing risk when interest rates rise and has more room to keep investing through a downturn. This screen allows a debt-to-equity ratio of up to 0.1, which still counts as essentially debt-free, and requires the company to be profitable so that cash-burning firms funded only by equity are left out.
Some borrowing can be efficient: cheap debt can raise returns on equity, and utilities or REITs are built around it. Treat this as a conservative screen, not a quality ranking. The Profitability tab shows the current ratio and returns on equity and capital; a large cash pile with low returns may mean the money is sitting idle.
Debt-Free Stocks FAQ
Which large US companies have no debt?
As of the October 29, 2026 close, 235 profitable US-listed stocks with a market cap above $1 billion had a debt-to-equity ratio of 0.1 or less. The largest are SK Hynix Inc. American Depositary Shares (SKHY), Micron Technology, Inc. (MU) and Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD).
What is the debt-to-equity ratio?
It is total debt divided by shareholders' equity. A ratio of 0.1 means the company owes 10 cents for every dollar of equity. Ratios above 1 mean debt exceeds equity.
Are debt-free companies safer investments?
They are less exposed to rising interest rates and credit crunches, and are less likely to go bankrupt. The share price can still fall sharply if sales or margins decline, so low debt reduces one risk rather than all of them.
