About the S&P SmallCap 600
The S&P SmallCap 600 was launched in 1994 and is maintained by S&P Dow Jones Indices. It covers the small-cap end of the U.S. market, below the S&P 500 and the S&P MidCap 400.
What sets the S&P 600 apart from other small-cap indices is its earnings requirement: a company must have positive earnings, both in the most recent quarter and over the last four quarters combined, to be added. Because of this, the index has fewer unprofitable companies than the Russell 2000, and it is often described as a "quality" small-cap benchmark.
Stocks are weighted by float-adjusted market capitalization, and the index is rebalanced every quarter.
