About the Dow Jones Industrial Average
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was created by Charles Dow and first published in 1896. Today it is maintained by S&P Dow Jones Indices, and a committee chooses its 30 members rather than following a fixed formula. Companies are picked for their reputation, sustained growth and interest to a large number of investors, and the committee aims for broad coverage of the U.S. economy (transportation and utility companies are excluded because they have their own Dow averages).
Unlike most modern indices, the Dow is price-weighted: a stock with a higher share price has a bigger influence on the index than a cheaper one, regardless of the size of the company. That is why a large stock split can reduce a company's weight in the Dow, and why a change in one high-priced stock can move the average by hundreds of points.
Because it holds only 30 stocks, the Dow is a narrow measure of the market compared with the S&P 500, but its long history makes it the most quoted gauge of how "the market" did on a given day.

There is no fixed schedule. The index committee replaces a company when it no longer represents the U.S. economy well, after a merger, or when a more relevant company emerges; in some years there are no changes at all.
