About the Russell 1000
The Russell 1000 is maintained by FTSE Russell and was launched in 1984. It is made up of the largest companies in the Russell 3000, which covers about 98% of the investable U.S. stock market, and on its own the Russell 1000 accounts for roughly 93% of that market.
Unlike the S&P indices, Russell indices are rules-based: companies are ranked by total market capitalization at each reconstitution, and those that rank in the top 1,000 become members, with no committee and no profitability requirement. Stocks are weighted by float-adjusted market capitalization.
The Russell 1000 is split into growth and value versions, the Russell 1000 Growth and Russell 1000 Value, which are widely used benchmarks for large-cap growth and value funds.
Funds that track the Russell 1000: iShares Russell 1000 ETF (IWB).
