About this screen
Return on equity measures how much profit a company earns for each dollar of shareholders' capital. A consistently high ROE suggests a business with pricing power or an efficient operating model. ROE can also be pushed up artificially by borrowing or large buybacks that shrink equity, so this screen adds a debt-to-equity limit of 1. The result favors companies whose high returns come from the business itself rather than from leverage.
Results are sorted by ROE, highest first. Very high ROE figures can still reflect a small equity base after years of buybacks, so look at return on invested capital and margins in the Profitability tab as well. One-time gains, such as an asset sale, can inflate a single year of results. The Filters tab shows ROE, debt-to-equity and size together.
High ROE Stocks FAQ
Which companies have the highest return on equity?
As of the October 29, 2026 close, 314 stocks with a market cap above $2 billion had an ROE of 20% or more and debt-to-equity of 1 or less. The highest ROE figures were at Twenty One Capital, Inc. (XXI), Medpace Holdings, Inc. (MEDP) and Lyft, Inc. (LYFT).
What is a good return on equity?
Long-run ROE for large US companies has averaged in the low to mid teens. Figures consistently above 20% are generally considered strong, though what counts as good varies by industry.
How does debt affect ROE?
Borrowing increases assets without increasing equity, so the same profit is spread over a smaller equity base and ROE rises. That is why ROE is best read alongside debt-to-equity or return on invested capital.
