About this screen
Momentum is the tendency of stocks that have risen strongly over the past several months to keep outperforming for a while. It is one of the best-documented factors in academic finance and is used by many quantitative funds. This screen combines a 30% six-month gain with prices above both the 50-day and 200-day averages, so stocks that have already rolled over drop out.
Momentum can reverse abruptly, especially around earnings or when the broad market changes direction. Many momentum strategies rebalance monthly and use stop rules for that reason. Check the Valuation tab to see how much the rally has stretched multiples, and the RSI in the Technicals tab for short-term overbought readings that often precede pauses in a trend.
Momentum Stocks FAQ
Which stocks have the strongest momentum?
As of the October 29, 2026 close, 340 US-listed stocks with a market cap above $1 billion were up 30% or more over six months and above their 50- and 200-day averages. The biggest 6-month gains were at Replimune Group, Inc. (REPL), Perfect Corp. (PERF) and Moderna, Inc. (MRNA).
What is momentum investing?
Momentum investing means buying assets that have performed well recently and avoiding those that have performed poorly, on the evidence that trends tend to persist for months. Lookback periods of 6 to 12 months are common.
Why check moving averages as well as returns?
A stock can show a large 6-month gain even after a sharp recent drop. Requiring the price to stay above the 50-day and 200-day averages keeps only stocks whose uptrend is still intact.
