About this screen
The price-to-earnings ratio is the most widely used valuation measure. A P/E of 10 or less means investors pay $10 or less for each $1 of the last twelve months of profit, roughly half the long-run market average. Only companies with positive earnings have a P/E, so loss-makers are excluded automatically. Low P/E stocks are the traditional hunting ground for value investors.
The lowest P/E ratios often belong to cyclical companies such as steelmakers, shippers, automakers and energy producers, whose earnings peak at the top of their cycle and make the stock look cheapest just before profits fall. Compare the forward P/E in the Valuation tab: a forward P/E far above the trailing one suggests analysts expect earnings to drop. One-time gains can also depress P/E temporarily.
Low P/E Stocks FAQ
Which stocks have the lowest P/E ratios?
As of the October 29, 2026 close, 238 profitable stocks with a market cap above $1 billion had a trailing P/E of 10 or less. The lowest P/E ratios were Vor Biopharma Inc. (VOR), Grupo Aeroméxico, S.A.B. de C.V. (AERO) and Diversified Energy Company PLC (DEC).
Is a low P/E ratio always good?
No. A low P/E can mean the market expects earnings to fall, the company faces legal or industry problems, or profits were boosted by a one-time gain. It is a starting point for research rather than a verdict.
What is the difference between trailing and forward P/E?
Trailing P/E uses earnings from the last twelve months, which are already reported. Forward P/E uses analysts' estimates for the next fiscal year, which can be more relevant but may turn out wrong.
