About this screen

Book value is what would be left for shareholders if a company sold its assets at balance-sheet value and paid off all its debts. A price-to-book ratio below 1 means the market values the company at less than that amount. Deep-value investors have long used this test to find potential bargains. The list usually includes banks, insurers, shipping companies, energy producers and some foreign companies listed through ADRs.

A low P/B is often deserved. Companies earning a low return on equity, holding assets that may be written down, or facing structural decline tend to trade below book value. Compare ROE in the Profitability tab: a low P/B combined with a solid ROE is more interesting than one with weak returns. Book value is less meaningful for asset-light businesses whose main assets are brands and software.

Stocks Trading Below Book Value FAQ

Which stocks trade below book value?

As of the October 29, 2026 close, 306 stocks with a market cap above $500 million had a price-to-book ratio of 1 or less. The lowest P/B ratios were Lufax Holding Ltd (LU), Quantum Corporation (QMCO) and AMC Entertainment Holdings, Inc (AMC).

What does it mean when a stock trades below book value?

It means the market capitalization is smaller than the accounting value of shareholders' equity. Investors may doubt that the assets are worth their stated value or expect the company to earn poor returns on them.

Why do banks often trade near or below book value?

A bank's assets are mostly loans and securities carried close to market value, so book value is a meaningful anchor. When returns on equity fall or loan losses are feared, bank shares often slip below book.
