About this screen
Transportation companies move the goods that flow through the economy: freight railroads carry bulk commodities and containers, trucking companies haul full and partial loads, and logistics firms handle parcel delivery, freight brokerage and supply-chain services. Shipping volumes rise and fall with industrial production and consumer demand, so many investors watch the group as an early read on the economy.
The list opens on the Profitability tab, where operating margin and ROIC separate efficient operators from the rest. Railroads typically earn high margins on networks that are hard to replicate, while trucking margins swing with freight rates and capacity. Check years of dividend growth in the Dividends tab and revenue growth to see where each company is in the freight cycle. Airlines and shipping companies are in separate industries.
Railroad and Trucking Stocks FAQ
Which railroad and trucking stocks are the largest?
As of the October 29, 2026 close, 28 US-listed railroad, trucking and freight logistics companies had a market cap of $1 billion or more. The largest companies on the list are Union Pacific Corporation (UNP), CSX Corporation (CSX) and United Parcel Service, Inc. (UPS).
What is the difference between truckload and LTL carriers?
Truckload carriers move a single customer's full trailer directly from origin to destination. Less-than-truckload (LTL) carriers combine smaller shipments from many customers and route them through terminal networks, which requires more infrastructure and supports higher pricing.
What is the operating ratio?
The operating ratio is operating expenses divided by revenue, a measure widely used by railroads and truckers. A lower ratio means a more profitable operation; it is roughly 100% minus the operating margin shown in the Profitability tab.
