About this screen
A short squeeze starts when a stock with many short sellers begins to rise. Short sellers lose money as the price climbs, and those who buy shares to close their positions push it higher still. This screen combines high short interest with a recent gain and solid trading volume, so it shows stocks where that pressure may already be building rather than every heavily shorted name.
Short interest is reported twice a month and lags the market, so some of the positions may already have been closed. Many squeezes fade as quickly as they start, and the high short interest often reflects real doubts about the company. Check the float size, days of volume and recent news before reading too much into the list.
Short Squeeze Candidates FAQ
Which heavily shorted stocks are rising?
In the latest data (as of October 29, 2026), 144 stocks with average volume above 500,000 shares had 15% or more of their float sold short and had risen at least 10% in a month. The highest short interest was at Venture Global, Inc. (VG), Hertz Global Holdings, Inc. (HTZ) and STAK Inc. (STAK).
What makes a stock a short squeeze candidate?
Traders usually look for high short interest, a small float, rising prices and heavy volume. Days to cover, short interest divided by average daily volume, shows how long short sellers would need to exit.
How long does a short squeeze last?
Most last from a few days to a few weeks. Once short sellers have covered and buying pressure fades, prices often fall back sharply.
