About this screen

A death cross happens when the 50-day average closing price drops below the 200-day average. Technical analysts read it as a sign that a stock's long-term uptrend has given way to a downtrend. It is the opposite of the golden cross, and a cluster of death crosses across large companies is often taken as a sign of a weakening market.

Because both averages lag the price, a death cross usually appears after a stock has already fallen a good deal, and in choppy markets it is often followed by a quick reversal. Look at the distance from the 52-week high and the RSI in the Technicals tab, and compare valuation before treating the signal as a reason to sell.

Death Cross Stocks FAQ

Which stocks just had a death cross?

As of the October 29, 2026 close, 136 stocks with a market cap above $1 billion had a death cross in the last 10 days. The largest were Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL), Alphabet Inc. (GOOG) and GE Aerospace (GE).

What is a death cross?

It is the point where a stock's 50-day simple moving average falls below its 200-day simple moving average. It signals that recent prices are weaker than the longer-term trend.

Is a death cross a reliable sell signal?

Its record is mixed. Many death crosses come near the end of a decline rather than the start, and the stock recovers soon after. Most traders use it as confirmation alongside other evidence.
