About this screen
High-yield stocks are common among REITs, business development companies, energy pipelines, tobacco and telecom companies. A high yield can mean an attractive income stream, but it can also mean the market expects the dividend to be cut.
Check the payout ratio and the years of dividend growth in the Dividends tab before relying on a high yield. Yields above 25% are excluded from the data because they are usually caused by one-off special distributions.

Are high dividend yields safe?
Not always. The yield rises when the share price falls, so a very high yield can reflect doubts about the company. A payout ratio above 100%, falling earnings or high debt are common warning signs.
How is dividend yield calculated?
Dividend yield is the forward annual dividend per share divided by the current share price. A $2 annual dividend on a $40 stock is a 5% yield.
