About this screen
Short interest is the number of shares sold short and not yet bought back. As a percentage of the float, it shows how many tradable shares are bet against. High short interest reflects a negative view by many investors, and it can also fuel sharp rallies (short squeezes) when good news forces short sellers to buy.
Short interest is reported twice a month by the exchanges, so it lags the market by a week or two.
Most Shorted Stocks FAQ
Which stocks have the highest short interest?
In the latest data (as of October 26, 2026), 377 US-listed stocks had 20% or more of their float sold short. The highest were Venture Global, Inc. (VG), Green Circle Decarbonize Technology Limited (GCDT) and Ramaco Resources, Inc. (METC).
What is short % of float?
It is the number of shares sold short divided by the shares available for public trading (the float). 20% means one in five tradable shares has been sold short.
What is a short squeeze?
A short squeeze happens when a heavily shorted stock rises and short sellers rush to buy shares to close their positions, pushing the price up further.
