About this screen
Utilities generate and deliver electricity, natural gas and water. Most operate as regulated monopolies, earning an allowed return on the infrastructure they build, which produces predictable earnings and supports steady dividends. Because demand barely changes in a recession, the sector is a classic defensive holding. Rising electricity demand from data centers and electrification has also made capital spending and rate-base growth a bigger part of the story.
The list is sorted by market cap and opens on the Dividends tab, where payout ratio and years of dividend growth show how well each dividend is supported. Utilities carry heavy debt and are sensitive to interest rates, so check debt/equity and beta as well. Independent power producers and renewable developers are in the same sector but behave less like regulated utilities. These criteria are a filter, not a recommendation.
Best Utility Stocks to Buy in 2026 FAQ
Which large utility stocks yield 3% or more?
As of the October 29, 2026 close, 40 utilities with a market cap above $5 billion had a dividend yield of at least 3%. The largest companies on the list are NextEra Energy, Inc. (NEE), The Southern Company (SO) and Duke Energy Corporation (DUK).
Why are utility stocks sensitive to interest rates?
Utilities borrow heavily to fund power plants and grids, so higher rates raise their costs. Their dividends also compete with bond yields, and when rates rise, income investors can get similar yields with less risk.
What does a regulated utility mean?
A regulated utility has an exclusive service territory and sets rates with approval from a state commission. The commission allows a return on the capital invested, which makes earnings growth largely a function of how much the utility invests in its network.
