About this screen
Beta measures how much a stock has moved relative to the market. A beta of 0.6 means that, on average, the stock rose or fell about 6% when the market moved 10%. Low-beta stocks are usually found among utilities, consumer staples, healthcare and some insurers, businesses whose earnings change little with the economy, and they are a common building block for defensive portfolios.
Beta is calculated from five years of monthly returns and describes the past, not the future. A low beta does not mean low risk: a stock can have little connection to the market and still fall sharply on its own news. Check the Dividends tab as well, since many low-beta stocks are steady income payers with long dividend records.
Low Beta Stocks FAQ
Which large stocks have the lowest beta?
As of the October 29, 2026 close, 320 US-listed stocks with a market cap above $5 billion had a 5-year beta between 0 and 0.6. The lowest betas belong to Trip.com Group Limited (TCOM), General Mills, Inc. (GIS) and BBB Foods Inc. (TBBB).
What does beta mean in stocks?
Beta compares a stock's price swings with the market's. A beta of 1 moves in line with the market, above 1 swings more and below 1 swings less.
Do low beta stocks perform worse?
Not necessarily. Research on the low-volatility anomaly has found that low-beta stocks have often delivered returns close to the market with smaller drawdowns, although they tend to lag in strong rallies.
