About this screen
No dividend is guaranteed, but some are better protected than others. This screen combines four common safety checks: a yield that is attractive without being extreme, a payout ratio that leaves at least 40% of earnings retained, debt no larger than shareholder equity, and ten years of consecutive increases. Together they aim at companies that can keep paying through a weak year rather than those offering the most income today.
Results are sorted by yield within the 2.5% to 6% band. The Filters tab shows every criterion side by side. Debt-to-equity is less meaningful for banks and insurers, whose balance sheets are built on leverage, and some companies with large buybacks show inflated ratios. For a second view of coverage, compare the free cash flow yield in the Valuation tab with the dividend yield.
Safe Dividend Stocks FAQ
Which dividend stocks pass these safety checks?
As of the October 29, 2026 close, 33 stocks with a market cap above $5 billion met all five criteria. The highest yields were Comcast Corporation (CMCSA), Pfizer Inc. (PFE) and Realty Income Corporation (O).
What makes a dividend safe?
Analysts usually look at whether earnings and free cash flow cover the dividend with room to spare, how much debt the company carries and how steady its profits are. A long record of increases shows that management treats the dividend as a priority.
Why exclude yields above 6%?
Very high yields often appear when a share price has fallen sharply, which can signal that the market expects a cut. Capping the yield keeps the focus on companies whose dividends are priced as sustainable.
