About this screen
Insurers collect premiums up front and pay claims later, investing the money in between. That pool, called float, produces investment income on top of any underwriting profit. The industry includes property-casualty carriers, life and annuity companies, specialty and reinsurance firms, and brokers, which earn commissions without taking on insurance risk. Many are steady dividend payers with below-market volatility.
The Profitability tab shows return on equity, the main gauge of how well an insurer uses its capital. Compare it with price-to-book in the Valuation tab and beta in Technicals. Brokers usually show higher margins and P/B than carriers because they need little capital. Catastrophe losses can swing property-casualty results sharply from year to year.
Insurance Stocks FAQ
Which insurance stocks are the largest?
As of the October 29, 2026 close, 74 insurance companies and brokers had a market cap of $2 billion or more. The largest companies on the list are Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (BRK-A), Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (BRK-B) and Chubb Limited (CB).
What is the combined ratio?
The combined ratio adds an insurer's claims and expenses and divides them by earned premiums. A ratio below 100% means the company made an underwriting profit; above 100% means it relied on investment income to stay profitable.
How do insurance brokers differ from insurers?
Brokers help clients buy coverage and earn commissions and fees from insurers or clients. They do not pay claims, so they need much less capital and are less exposed to catastrophe losses than carriers.
