About this screen

A high yield is only useful if the company can afford it. This screen pairs a yield of 4% or more with a payout ratio of 50% or less, so each dividend is covered at least twice by trailing earnings. That combination removes most of the yield traps that dominate pure high-yield lists, where payouts often exceed profits. What remains tends to include cyclical companies, financials and stocks the market considers cheap.

Results are sorted by yield. A low payout ratio can be temporary: cyclical businesses earn the most at the top of their cycle, which makes payouts look small just before profits fall. Compare earnings growth in the Growth tab and free cash flow yield in the Valuation tab. REITs rarely appear here because their payout ratios are measured against net income rather than funds from operations.

High Yield, Low Payout Stocks FAQ

Which high-yield stocks have low payout ratios?

As of the October 29, 2026 close, 154 stocks with a market cap above $1 billion had a dividend yield of at least 4% and a payout ratio of 50% or less. The highest yields were ARMOUR Residential REIT, Inc. (ARR), Mach Natural Resources LP (MNR) and AGNC Investment Corp. (AGNC).

Why does a low payout ratio matter?

It leaves a cushion: if earnings fall, the company can keep paying without borrowing or cutting. It also leaves money for reinvestment, buybacks or future dividend increases.

Why are REITs missing from this list?

REITs must distribute most of their taxable income, and depreciation lowers their net income, so payout ratios based on earnings often exceed 100%. Investors usually judge REIT dividends against funds from operations instead.
