About this screen
Energy ETFs hold oil and gas producers, integrated majors, refiners, equipment and services firms and pipeline operators, including master limited partnerships. Their returns follow commodity prices closely, which makes the group one of the most cyclical parts of the market. Investors use these funds for inflation sensitivity, for income from pipelines and large producers, or for a view on oil prices.
Yield and 1-year volatility vary widely here: pipeline and MLP funds usually pay more and swing less than exploration and services funds. This page opens on the Risk tab; switch to the Distributions tab to compare yields. Some MLP funds are structured as corporations and pay taxes inside the fund, which can reduce returns. Commodity futures funds are a separate asset class.
Best Energy ETFs to Buy in 2026 FAQ
How many energy ETFs are there?
As of the October 29, 2026 close, 37 energy sector ETFs had at least $100 million in assets. The largest are Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE), Alerian MLP ETF (AMLP) and Vanguard Energy ETF (VDE).
What is an MLP ETF?
An MLP ETF holds master limited partnerships, mostly pipeline and storage operators that pay high distributions. Funds holding mainly MLPs are often taxed as corporations, while others limit MLPs to a quarter of assets or hold the pipeline companies' corporate shares instead.
Do energy ETFs track oil prices?
Not directly. Energy stock funds hold companies whose profits depend on oil and gas prices, so they tend to move with them, but company costs, debt and dividends also matter. Funds that track oil prices hold futures and are listed under the Commodities asset class.
