About the US personal saving rate

The personal saving rate is the share of disposable (after-tax) personal income that households do not spend, as estimated monthly by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. It was around 10–13% in the 1960s and 1970s, fell to a few percent before 2008, and spiked above 30% in April 2020 when spending collapsed and stimulus payments arrived.

A falling saving rate can support spending in the short run but leaves households with less cushion; a rising one often signals caution.
