About the US inflation rate
The US inflation rate on this chart is the 12-month change in the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), published monthly by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It is the headline inflation number in the news: how much prices for a broad basket of goods and services rose compared with the same month a year earlier.
CPI covers food, energy, housing, transport, medical care, clothing and services. The series goes back to 1914, so it includes the deflation of the early 1930s, the inflation of the 1970s and the 2021–2022 surge. October 2025 was never published because of a government shutdown, so that month is blank.
